At the last Petersen event of the year, this pair was just chilling at the rear of the lot. Seeing these two together got me thinking: Would you rather have a stock NSX or a modified one?

The red one was bone stock, except for wheels.

The black one had a full rear diffuser, huge rear wing, supercharger, wheels.

Which would you pick? The reliable, stock example or the exciting modified version?

Stock. It's hard to beat a car the way it was intended to be.

Stock will maintain more value and mods generally look stupid after many years.

Performance modifications don't go out of style.

Yes they do. Go look at performance mods they did in the 70s and tell me that those are still in style.

Period appropriate modifications are a popular thing.

I got a ride in an NSX...turbo. There's pressed in the seat acceleration and then there's pressed in the seat so hard you feel the seat foam compress and deform around you. That was the nice part of modified. However, sometimes it did have a tendency to stall after a thing like that. the tune was probably off a bit. This was the late 90's. So i wouldnt mind modified, as long as it's not garish or causing maintenance visits to fix glitchy behavior.

I don't see how a couple of small, quick spooling, ball bearing turbos to up the NSX's miserly power to the 450-500 range would ever go out of style. Leave the cosmetic "mods" out, and just give it decent power, tires, and maybe fresh bushings.

That would be the way to modify one if you were going to. Make it better from the factory without ruining the original design intentions. The ones in question have ugly cosmetic mods though.

For something like a NSX, definitely stock.

I'd prefer light modification. Wheels, suspension, sway bars, etc. Just a few things to make a killer car even better.

500 on an NSX? that's a serious fucking jump. you're going to need a lot more work than throwing an ebay turbo on to do that

To be fair, ugly vs. gorgeous is entirely subjective. To have a car that is modified is to make it YOURS, and to make it better. I love the idea of a car modified to keep within the original design intentions, but taken to a higher benchmark than the factory design. Many performance cars are wanting for more power, handling or even styling, because that is how it made sense logistically for the factory to supply them. When you modify a car with a reputation you inevitably piss people off, but make yourself happy and I think we can all appreciate that.

stock with small, barely noticeable mods.

slight suspension drop. new wheels and tires. new radio maybe. swaybars. that sort of thing.

keep the originals so that the car can always be brought back to 100% factory.

I was thinking one of the many Garrett kits, but superchargers also seem to be a popular bolt-on option. The upside of how under powered these came stock is that the engines are pretty stout, so if you're going for quick spool rather than monster top end, you don't need to build the bottom end.

From the fantasy browsing I've done, many folks seem to agree the stock block is good for 400-430rwhp, which is in the 500hp range at the crank.

Depends on the car, depends on the mods. If I had a mint first year NSX with low miles, that baby would stay stock. If I had an older one that was perhaps a little "loved," then it's on. Nothing rice, though. It's appalling how many riced out NSXs there are.

Stock as it would probably sell for more (assuming similar mileage), and I would most definitely be selling it right after I took a quick test drive:)

Mostly stock but tastefully upgraded. Such as the M5 that I just bought. Most of the car is stock, especially appearance-wise and everything functions as designed but one of the previous owners addressed all of the weak points of the car with OEM or better parts, such as the failure-prone (and ludicrously expensive to fix) self-levelling suspension. Also updated with some thoughtful touches, such as xenon headlights, a modern MP3/Bluetooth/iPod/XM-compatible stereo deck.

With any other car, I might entertain the modified option. But this is a pre-facelift NSX. If you don't keep it stock you're a horrible person and you hate Ayrton Senna.

Seriously, a stock early NSX in red is my end-all, be-all dream car.
